Beskrivelse: Based on ancient medicine's belief that a good life depends on good health, the film attempts to take stock of the state of health in post-war Europe and the successes that have been achieved in disease prevention and health care. These successes, the film suggests, must be based on international cooperation without regard to man-made borders. The film's thesis is illustrated with a sequence of clips. Tuberculosis vaccinations are shown in Greek villages, where children are particularly at risk; children living in Rome in shanties within sight of ancient landmarks as well as modern housing developments are also at particular risk of infection; a hospital for children can be built in the Greek town of Lamia with the help of the Marshall Plan, while in Mesolongi (where Byron died of "hypothermia") aid money goes to an anti-malaria campaign; cancer research is being carried out; and in Genoa, WHO scientists are researching disease and malnutrition. The film, originally to be called simply Health, was one of Humphrey Jennings' pet projects. Tragically, he fell off a cliff while filming in Greece on September 24, 1950. Graham Wallace completed the film. The film is one of a series of six called The Changing Face of Europe. Each film deals with a different economic or social issue. © 2002 Linda R. Christenson
